“Parents were not booking a lesson, they were holding a slot for the term. The trouble was the timetable only existed in my head.” Conor, on getting a term out of a notebook
Conor teaches guitar and piano from a room at home in Maynooth — teenagers after school, adult beginners in the evening. What he actually sells is not a lesson but a standing slot: Tuesday at 4:15 belongs to the same student for the whole term, ten weeks, paid in advance, skipping half term.
The admin was never really about money, it was about movement. Every message came from a parent, about a student, usually mid school-run: can we move Thursday, he has a match, is there a lesson in half term. Each one needed him to hold the entire timetable in his head and find a gap that did not exist, because the week was already full of other people's standing slots. The make-ups leaked into Saturdays.
His teaching hours went in once — the afternoons and evenings he genuinely works — and half term, bank holidays and his own time off are blocked out as date exceptions, so the page simply does not offer them. At the start of a term, families book their slot from the same link instead of waiting for him to text round, and the times already taken do not show.
Confirmations and reminders go to the parent by email rather than living in a thread that scrolls away, and every student has a record with their booking history on it, so "how many has he actually missed this term" is a question with an answer. He also added a Saturday morning group theory class — six places, running weekly — which turned the morning he used to lose to one-off make-ups into the best-paid hour of his week.
The timetable no longer lives in his head, which is most of the win. A reminder the day before has cut the forgotten lessons — the ones where a parent's week simply got away from them — and the lessons that do get missed are now a matter of record rather than recollection when it comes to the end-of-term invoice. The Saturday theory class filled by its second term, almost entirely from families he already taught.
Teaching hours go in one time; half term, bank holidays and time off are blocked as exceptions.
A group class that replaced a morning previously lost to one-off make-up lessons.
Families can see what is genuinely free instead of asking him to go and check.
